AISI 304

Standard Austenitic Stainless Steel

Material Overview

AISI 304 - Standard Austenitic Stainless Steel

Material Type

Type: Austenitic, non-magnetic, highly versatile

Key Benefit: Most widely used stainless steel grade worldwide

Corrosion Resistance

Excellent corrosion resistance in atmospheric, mild chemical, and fresh-water exposure. Superior resistance to oxidation and many organic and inorganic compounds.

Fabrication

  • Weldability: Superior - can be welded by all standard methods
  • Formability: Excellent deep drawing and forming ability
  • Machinability: Good, though work-hardens during cutting

Mechanical Properties

Tensile Strength: 520-750 MPa
Yield Strength: 210-310 MPa
Hardness: ~190 HB
Service Temperature: Up to ~870°C (intermittent)

Applications

  • Food-grade shafts and processing equipment
  • Chemical tanks and pressure vessels
  • Architectural structures and trim
  • Dairy and beverage equipment
  • Kitchen equipment and appliances
  • Pharmaceutical processing equipment
  • Heat exchangers and condensers

Advantages

  • Versatility: Suitable for wide range of applications
  • Hygiene: Easy to clean and maintain, FDA approved
  • Aesthetic Appeal: Bright, attractive finish
  • Durability: Long service life in corrosive environments
  • Non-Magnetic: Ideal for electronic applications
  • Recyclable: 100% recyclable material

Processing Characteristics

  • Welding: Excellent weldability without pre-heat
  • Heat Treatment: Solution annealing at 1010-1120°C
  • Cold Working: Work hardens rapidly, requires annealing between operations
  • Hot Working: 1150-900°C range recommended
