Hadfield Manganese Steel

Austenitic manganese steel known for its high impact strength and resistance to abrasion once work-hardened.

Hadfield Steel: Work-Hardening Champion

Hadfield steel, or varying grades of austenitic manganese steel (typically 12-14% Mn), is unique in that it is extremely tough and work-hardens under impact. The more you beat it, the harder it gets.

Key Features & Properties

  • Work Hardening: Surface hardness increases dramatically under impact (up to 600 HB).
  • Toughness: Unmatched toughness and ductility in the core.
  • Non-Magnetic: Austenitic structure makes it non-magnetic.
  • Wear: Excellent resistance to gouging abrasion.

Typical Applications

  • Crusher jaws and cones
  • Railroad crossings and frogs
  • Mining shovel teeth and buckets
  • Shot blast cabinet liners

Technical Specifications

This steel is difficult to machine and is usually cast or ground. It is the material of choice for high-impact wear applications.
